A series of paintings, painted en plein aire, documenting and celebrating the succession of the bush in the old fields surrounding the McKellar Studio.
In the Bushwall Series, I wanted to capture and express my excitement at being surrounded by the dark wall of trees that is returning the fields around my studio to bush. I followed the seasons, starting with yellow weak greens and ending with red purpley browns. The problem was retaining all that tree energy – how it fills up with greens and skinnys off with the reds. Between the trees were deep dark holes, shadow holes, going into the painting, drawing in and going behind. That powerful air space has been an interest of mine for a long time.
