In the summer of 2000 Joy and I spent six weeks in a 20-foot sailboat, exploring the coasts of Georgian Bay and the North Channel. During that time we lived very close to nature, and I felt a need to tell what I was experiencing. Drawing on wood blocks and writing became the vehicle that resulted in this book. I hope you enjoy it.

A special thanks to Joy Allan, who traveled with me, then worked with me as we edited, printed and assembled Wrapped In Space.

Thanks to Bob Foster and Paul Vasey who helped smooth the rough edges.

Thanks to all my friends who patiently listened again and again as I read the poems again and again…

 ‘Wrapped In Space

Hawk’s Feather

Low multi-coloured
rock humps
fill
the bay
with ponds
Stone borders
grasses  fireweed
Queen Ann’s lace
and
cardinal flowers
sewn together
by
leaping leopard frogs
I make my way
slowly
from rock to rock
up onto
a
cedar covered
point
stopped
and
there in the pond
five geese
I
watch in wonder
at the
comfort of these
birds.

I do not move
but
slowly they become
aware of me
They do not
fly
but raise their heads
higher and higher
stretching
necks
out
taught
Then
on the far side of the pond
a
bull frog croaked
Once
twice
three times
four
on the
fifth
all the geese
rose in flight
three to one side
two to the other
The frog
croaked no more
I stood
for a long
while
and then
looking down
at my feet
There was a reddish brown
hawk’s feather
I slowly
lifted it
and felt the warm
happy glow
that comes
from
seeing life
